petition

The excellent Launceston Steam Railway is having problems with its local council which seems to have lost the plot big time!

The railway has been working with Cornwall County Council for some time with the intention of extending to Egloskerry - and on the strength of this purchased land in Egloskerry for the new line.

But now the council is planning to build a multi purpose route (walking, bikes, horses) which the railway fears may make it's future unviable if they can't get through to Egloskerry. Personally I don't believe anything - least of all a mere trailway - will stop the huge rail revival in the UK, but all the same it will make extension more difficult if too many users object to the railway returning, not an issue at all now but could be in the future.

To this end I think we should ALL sign the petition to CCC to get them to rethink this plan. the petition can be signed here.

Plans are being drawn up to extend a Westcountry railway line from its present one-mile operation to nine miles.
The new route for the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway would run from Caffyns, near Lynton, to Blackmoor Gate and Wist-landpound Reservoir.
The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Trust, which is a registered charity, will submit the application to the Exmoor National Park Authority and North Devon Council.
The trust has already shown that it can build and operate a successful railway, having operated a line from Woody Bay Station to Killington Lane as a non-profit-making community enterprise.
If planning permission is granted, the trust will initially extend the line three miles from Killington Lane to Blackmoor Gate.
The plans include moving the headquarters of the railway from Woody Bay to Blackmoor, where the National Park Authority wants to create a transport hub.
Spokesman Tony Nicholson said: "A terminus on the edge of Exmoor National Park will enable visitors to park their cars at Blackmoor Gate and ride into the National Park on the train without disturbing the very beauty and tranquillity they have come to enjoy."
An open meeting will be held at the Calvert Trust Discovery Centre at Wistlandpound next Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, as part of the public consultation.

GARTELL Light Railway has achieved a long-held ambition to extend northwards on the track bed of the old Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway.
Now incorporating a working junction, a railway over railway flyover, a level crossing and a new platform for the station named 'Tower View' this railway, with its half-sized trains, is unique on the British heritage scene.
Two steam engines and various diesels haul trains at frequent intervals throughout the day. No need to worry about the weather either as all the coaches are fully enclosed. The line is operated by volunteers who have been highly trained in the duties that it takes to run a safe and efficient railway. Opening at 10am, the first train departs at 10.30am and at regular intervals until 4.30pm. Come early and enjoy one of their legendary bacon or breakfast rolls.
The railway is very family-orientated, and tickets are valid for as many trips as you like, subject to seat availability.
Home cooked food, drinks and snacks are available in the 'Pines' function suite which doubles as the station Buffet/Restaurant, or why not bring a picnic to enjoy by the lake?
On open days the railway is sign-posted from Templecombe and Henstridge. Visit www.glr-online.co.uk See us on Facebook or call 01963 - 370752.
