A MAJOR study has concluded that there is a prospect of the rail link between Stratford-upon-Avon and Honeybourne being reinstated at some point in the future—but it would be very expensive, costing between £76 million and £97 million.
It would provide the opportunity for direct passenger services to Oxford and Worcester and possibly to London Paddington. But it would involve creating a “dive under” at Evesham Place and Wetherby Way. The roundabout in Evesham Road would therefore be unaffected.
The study is among papers connected with the development of Stratford District Council’s local plan core strategy that are being presented to the authority’s ruling cabinet at its meeting on Monday 8th October.
Cllr Chris Saint (Cons, Tredington), the leader of the council, said: “At this stage, due to the significant issues that the study has identified, it is too early to say whether or not the rail link will be constructed.
“I acknowledge that there is strong opposition re-opening the line and strong support for its reinstatement. The debate will continue for some time.”
To put this in perspective in the old days when motorways were still being built this would have been the cost for about a mile or even less! Get it open!!
